Diesel genset price in India: what you pay per kVA, 10 to 320 kVA
Dealers' listed prices for CPCB IV+ silent gensets from 10 to 320 kVA, the price per kVA at each size, and what makes one quote dearer than another.
By Engines India Desk
A new CPCB IV+ silent diesel genset costs roughly ₹3.5 lakh to ₹6 lakh in the 10 to 40 kVA range, around ₹11 lakh at 125 kVA and over ₹20 lakh at 250 kVA, going by prices dealers list online. The bigger the set, the less you pay for each kVA: about ₹36,500 per kVA for a 10 kVA set, against about ₹8,600 per kVA at 250 to 320 kVA. Here is what dealers list, what the per-kVA numbers mean and what pushes a quote up.
Do makers publish genset prices?
Not that we could find. We found no current price list from Kirloskar Oil Engines, Mahindra Powerol, Cummins India or Greaves; their pages give ranges and specifications. The price you pay is set by the dealer and depends on the enclosure, the control panel, delivery and taxes.
So the figures below are dealers' asking prices, read from their listing pages on 27 October 2026. They are a guide to the range, not a quote. Ask at least two authorised dealers for a written quote on the same specification.
Genset prices by kVA: what dealers list
All of these are silent (canopy) diesel sets listed as CPCB IV+, the emission norm every new set up to 800 kW must meet (see our CPCB IV+ explainer).
| Size | Brand as listed | Dealer, city | Listed price | Price per kVA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 kVA (air-cooled) | Kirloskar | Swastik Power, Chandigarh | ₹3,65,000 | ₹36,500 |
| 15 kVA | Kirloskar | Swastik Power, Chandigarh | ₹3,85,000 | ₹25,700 |
| 25 kVA | Kirloskar | Swastik Power, Chandigarh | ₹5,50,000 | ₹22,000 |
| 30 kVA | Kirloskar | Grace Gensets, Gurugram | ₹5,36,000 + GST | ₹17,900 |
| 30 kVA | Kirloskar | Swastik Power, Chandigarh | ₹5,70,000 | ₹19,000 |
| 40 kVA | Kirloskar | Grace Gensets, Gurugram | ₹5,85,000 + GST | ₹14,600 |
| 58.5 kVA | Kirloskar | Swastik Power, Chandigarh | ₹7,50,000 | ₹12,800 |
| 125 kVA | Tata engine | Rishabh Power Solutions, Ghaziabad | ₹11,20,909 (approx.) | ₹9,000 |
| 250 kVA | Kirloskar | Northern Consultancies, Rohtak | ₹21,50,000 | ₹8,600 |
| 320 kVA | Mahindra | Grace Gensets, Gurugram | ₹27,50,000 + GST | ₹8,600 |
Price per kVA is the listed price divided by the kVA rating, rounded. Grace Gensets says 18% GST is extra on its prices; the other pages do not say whether GST is included, so ask.
Alpha Diesels, a Bhiwadi dealer that says it is an authorised Greaves Power dealer for North India, publishes wider bands from quotes it has seen in 2024 to 2026:
| Size | Indicative price band |
|---|---|
| 5 to 25 kVA | ₹1.5 to 4 lakh |
| 30 to 62.5 kVA | ₹4 to 8 lakh |
| 82.5 to 125 kVA | ₹8 to 14 lakh |
| 160 to 250 kVA | ₹14 to 25 lakh |
| 320 to 500 kVA | ₹25 to 50 lakh |
| 625 to 1,000 kVA | ₹50 to 90 lakh |
Most of the listed prices above sit inside these bands. The 10 and 15 kVA listings are near the top of the first band, and the 25 kVA listing is above it.
Why does a small genset cost more per kVA?
A 10 kVA set and a 40 kVA set both need an engine, an alternator, a control panel, a fuel tank, a battery and an acoustic canopy. Many of those parts do not get four times dearer when the set gets four times bigger. The fixed part of the cost is spread over fewer kVA in a small set.
That is why the price per kVA falls fast up to about 60 kVA, and then flattens out between 125 and 320 kVA at around ₹8,600 to ₹9,000.
It is also why you should not buy a bigger set just because the kVA looks cheap. A set that runs well below its rating burns more diesel for each unit of power and can suffer wet stacking, as our fuel consumption guide shows. Size it on your load first, using our genset sizing guide, then compare prices.
What drives the price of a genset?
Alpha Diesels lists the things that move a final quote:
- Brand. Its page says the upper end of each band is for premium brands with fuller specifications.
- Canopy. An open set is cheaper than a silent one. Every listing in our table is silent.
- AMF panel. An automatic mains failure panel starts the set when the grid fails and switches the load over. It is an option, not standard on every quote.
- Fuel tank size.
- The maker's current rates, which change through the year.
- Delivery to site and taxes.
Two more things to check on any quote:
- The emission norm. Since 1 July 2024 a new set up to 800 kW must be CPCB IV+. Alpha Diesels' page says CPCB IV+ sets cost 10 to 15% more upfront than the CPCB II sets they replaced. Makers do not publish a figure for this.
- The rating. One listing we read gave a different kVA in its title and its specification. Check that the price is for the prime rating you need, on the maker's spec sheet.
Worked example: comparing two 30 kVA quotes
Say a workshop has two quotes for a 30 kVA silent CPCB IV+ set, matching the two listings in the table:
- Quote A: ₹5,36,000 plus 18% GST
- Quote B: ₹5,70,000, GST not stated
Quote A with GST is ₹5,36,000 × 1.18 = ₹6,32,480.
If Quote B already includes GST, it is about ₹62,000 cheaper than Quote A. If GST is extra on Quote B too, it becomes ₹6,72,600, about ₹40,000 dearer. The headline prices point one way; the tax line can point the other.
Before choosing, get both quotes to state the same things in writing: the GST, delivery and installation, the AMF panel, the battery, the warranty and the first-year service.
